Coursera’s 2025 Global Skills Report highlights a powerful shift in how North American companies build and manage their workforce, with skills-first learning playing a pivotal role in shaping future-ready talent pipelines.
According to the report, 99% of employers in North America are either embracing or actively exploring skills-based hiring, focusing on verified skills rather than solely on traditional degrees. This strategic shift comes as 94% of U.S. companies anticipate substantial AI-led transformation by 2030.
“Learners across North America are translating the AI buzz into real, measurable outcomes,” said Zac Rule, Coursera’s Global Head of Enterprise Sales and Channel. He emphasized that integrating industry-aligned micro-credentials into education and training programs can enhance GenAI proficiency and address talent shortages—especially when aimed at underrepresented groups.
The United States ranks fourth globally on Coursera’s AI Maturity Index, underscoring its position as a hub for both AI learning and talent. Notably, course enrollments in North America surged, with a 135% rise in generative AI, a 37% jump in professional certificates, and a 15% increase in critical thinking courses.
In-demand skills reported by employers include AI and machine learning, customer service, creative thinking, curiosity, and talent management.
The report concludes that shifting hiring models to focus on demonstrated competencies helps companies reduce attrition, streamline career growth, and identify job-ready candidates more effectively. To evolve into skills-based organizations, companies are urged to adopt validated micro-credentials, focus on key proficiencies in job listings, and use robust skill assessments during hiring.
