A recent survey by Inmar Intelligence highlights a critical link between workplace conditions and employee mental health, underlining the role of thoughtful leadership in shaping well-being.

The May 2025 report, based on responses from 1,000 full- and part-time U.S. workers, reveals that 34% believe their job has a positive effect on their mental health, while 33% feel it negatively impacts them. This near-equal split underscores the urgent need for better communication, leadership support, and inclusive workplace strategies.

Key factors driving positive mental health at work include job security (45%), manageable workloads (40%), and supportive management (40%). Flexible work arrangements (39%) and a healthy culture (38%) also play strong roles.

On the other hand, employees pointed to poor communication (32%), excessive or unclear workloads (30%), and toxic cultures (29%) as primary causes of mental strain. Lack of recognition (25%) and unsupportive leadership (24%) also ranked high among negative influences.

“Job conditions and mental health are deeply connected,” Inmar emphasized in a May 29 post, calling for companies to improve clarity, communication, and leadership responsiveness.

Supporting research further validates these insights. A Simon Fraser University study found employees were 55% more likely to disclose mental health concerns in supportive work environments—conditions that also led to reduced absenteeism and better productivity.

A University of Iowa study suggested that paid leave could reduce suicide rates, especially if tailored at the organizational level. Meanwhile, the Business Group on Health reported that 93% of 131 global employers plan to maintain or grow their well-being programs in 2025. Mental health is the centerpiece for nearly half of these companies.

Common well-being efforts include employee assistance programs, mindfulness training, and resilience-building initiatives—reflecting a growing recognition that employee mental health is no longer optional but essential.
