A recent report by Moo highlights a concerning trend: AI in the workplace is increasing feelings of loneliness among knowledge workers. The July 24 report reveals that 79% of workers feel isolated, with younger generations hit hardest. Notably, 89% of Gen Z and 82% of millennials report workplace loneliness.

Moreover, 84% of employees required to use AI at work say they feel lonely. This suggests a strong connection between AI in the workplace and employee isolation. Moo’s findings underline the importance of balancing AI adoption with human connection.

Claire Donald, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Moo, emphasized the need for balance. “AI is transforming work and boosting automation. Yet, connection, creativity, and culture are essential for thriving workplaces,” she said. Donald added that companies adopting AI must also focus on regular interactions and collaboration.

The survey, which polled 1,000 U.S. knowledge workers, found that 65% now prefer turning to AI tools before asking a colleague. Millennials lead this trend, with 71% opting for AI first, versus 50% of Gen Z and baby boomers.

However, not all reactions are positive. While 62% are encouraged to use AI, 28% express irritation toward colleagues who rely on AI tools. This tension shows how AI in the workplace may affect peer relationships.

As AI usage rises, 60% believe it could replace some coworkers. But Moo warns that increased loneliness could lead to a negative work culture. Isolated workers are more likely to describe their work environment as overwhelming or stressful.

Onboarding Can Reduce Isolation

Proper onboarding might reduce the negative effects of AI in the workplace. Yet, only half of the surveyed employees said they received effective onboarding. Others reported unclear job expectations and lack of support.

Moo suggests pairing new hires with mentors to strengthen company culture. By doing so, companies can combat isolation and improve AI onboarding experiences. As AI in the workplace continues to grow, nurturing human interaction is more crucial than ever.
