Managers Struggle to Attend Training, ATD Report Reveals

Most organizations offer manager training programs, but over 90% of managers cannot attend due to time constraints, according to the Association for Talent Development (ATD). The report, released on Sept. 2, highlights a growing challenge for leadership development in the workplace.

In addition, 63% of managers admitted the role is harder than expected. More than half also reported that their organizations provided little or no preparation for leadership. This gap leaves many managers unprepared for essential responsibilities.

ATD emphasized that managers must build skills to perform effectively. Training not only equips managers for success but also ensures employees thrive under their leadership.

Key Skills and Training Gaps

The survey included 409 talent development professionals. Respondents identified communication, performance management, and employee feedback as top skills for manager effectiveness. Feedback delivery emerged as a critical focus in most manager training programs.

While organizations use multiple training methods, high-performing companies favor pre- and post-training activities. They also rely on bite-sized learning modules to reinforce knowledge. About 53% of employers offering post-training support provide resource libraries, including videos, articles, and job aids.

Additionally, 62% of organizations use coaching or mentorship in leadership training. This approach helps managers strengthen workplace culture, conflict resolution, and ethical decision-making.

Training Boosts Engagement

Research also links manager training with employee engagement. Gallup studies show manager engagement has dropped significantly, especially among women and professionals under 35. Coaching programs that teach managers how to coach others, and receive coaching themselves increase manager satisfaction.

Gallup found that when managers receive continuous encouragement, their thriving improves, further supporting team performance. Training, therefore, is essential not just for skills but also for long-term leadership resilience.

By addressing these training barriers, organizations can prepare managers to meet workplace challenges while improving overall performance outcomes.
