ChatGPT’s Workplace Impact Grows: Study Finds Big Changes in Office Communication

workplace communication

According to a brand-new research report by The Adaptavist Group and ChatGPT, workplace communication is being significantly reshaped by the rise of GenAI tools. The main source of the data for the 2025 ‘Digital Etiquette’ report was a survey of 4000 knowledge workers and 900 business leaders in the US, UK, Canada, and Germany.

The results of the research indicate that 26% of the Canadian respondents have reduced the frequency of face-to-face conversations with their colleagues after they started using GenAI tools. At the same time, 23% indicate that they feel more comfortable in making small talk with an AI bot than with human colleagues. To sum up, the use of AI has altered the workforce’s communication style and the level of its formality. About 3 in 5 people declare that their writing has become clearer, and nearly half of the total number say their teams are now communicating more clearly. On the other hand, almost one in five people admits that their politeness has deteriorated since they have adopted AI assistance.

Impact of ChatGPT on Workplace Communication

What is more, a significant number of professionals have turned to ChatGPT to carry out their various tasks. There are almost 50% of AI-implementing managers now resort to AI for legal or policy questions, a proportion of more than one-third who use it for HR issues. Moreover, this research points to shifts in skills where 68% of employees think that AI has helped their writing. On the other hand, some individuals report improvements in their critical thinking (47%), design (41%), and coding (36%) skills. At the same time, 24% of them are worried that excessive AI reliance will gradually lower their skills.

Whilst it is true that company culture matters significantly, organizations that promote responsibility when it comes to AI usage experience benefits such as better teamwork, higher job satisfaction, and communication that is more efficient and clear. On the other hand, those who do not wish to use AI tend to see the advantages become fewer.

Overall, ChatGPT and GenAI have reshaped communication, helping people deliver clearer messages and work faster. However, many leaders warn that AI may weaken the social side of communication, interaction, and skills in the long run. Companies now face a dilemma: how to use the benefits of AI while still maintaining human connection and preserving soft skills.
