O’Reilly introduced Verifiable Skills to promote competency-based learning & encourage learners & organizations to set their sights on developing those skills effectively. This platform builds efficient progression paths from concepts to mastery of various technologies. Verifiable Skills by O’Reilly helps the company identify expert-developed competency levels at five stages of mastery. It enables the platform to deliver personalized learning plans for each learner, addressing their specific gaps within competency stages. Additionally, learners receive verifiable badges to showcase mastery of various skills they have developed. These badges are recognized as credible through the Open Badges 2.0 system and a third-party verification service. This also helps employers immediately verify the authenticity of the expert knowledge of the person holding the badges.
Verifiable Skills focuses solely on the basic knowledge learners must acquire. This helps to remove any irrelevant material, besides enabling faster and more efficient learning. The first release of Verifiable Skills addresses key areas, including Python, Power BI, Java, and Kubernetes. Additional areas will be added toward the end of 2026. This is reflective of emerging industry trends that increasingly call for skills that are verifiable.
“The shift toward skills-based hiring and internal mobility requires objective proficiency. Measurement that goes beyond traditional credentials and binary completion tracking,” said Julie Baron, chief product officer at O’Reilly. “O’Reilly Verifiable Skills allows organizations to track meaningful skill development across their entire workforce. With clear metrics that show skill plan adoption, learning investment, and advancement.”
