Jobseekers today are prioritizing an employer’s reputation before hitting “apply,” according to a new report from iHire. The study analyzed the behaviors and challenges of four major generational groups—Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z—revealing how employer branding now plays a critical role in recruitment.

Nearly half of Baby Boomers (48.2%), 44.8% of Gen X, and 40.3% of Millennials actively seek reviews and testimonials from current or former employees before applying to a company. While only a third of Gen Z does the same, 36.8% reported researching customer feedback to understand the company’s reputation from a consumer standpoint.

The report highlights a growing need for strong employer branding, noting that candidates across all age groups research a company’s culture and values before considering a role. More than 25% of respondents said they assess an organization’s culture, and around a quarter of Gen X (23.4%), Millennials (26.7%), and Gen Z (28.4%) consider the company’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts when deciding to apply.

Recruitment challenges also vary by generation. Over a third of Gen X (35.7%) and Gen Z (35.8%) cited difficulty finding roles that match their skills or experience. Meanwhile, Baby Boomers (30.7%) and Millennials (32%) expressed frustration over the lack of response after applying or interviewing. Salary expectations remain a concern as well, with roughly a quarter of Gen X (27.9%), Millennials (25.7%), and Gen Z (26.4%) saying it’s hard to find jobs that meet their compensation needs.

iHire President and CEO Steve Flook emphasized the importance of understanding generational differences to attract and retain top talent. “With multiple generations coexisting in today’s workforce, employers must consider each group’s unique challenges, preferences, and goals in their recruitment and retention strategies,” Flook stated.

As jobseekers dig deeper into company reputations, organisations must double down on transparency, inclusion, and workplace culture to stand out in a competitive talent market.
