Sofinnova Partners

Sofinnova Partners has promoted Javier Nunez-Vicandi to Partner, strengthening its digital medicine strategy. The European life sciences venture capital firm announced the appointment across its Paris, London, and Milan offices.

Javier Nunez-Vicandi will join Edward Kliphuis and Simon Turner in spearheading the firm’s Digital Medicine strategy. This investment strategy involves backing ventures that work in biology, data, and artificial intelligence.

Following his appointment as an advisor for Sofinnova Partners since 2022, Nunez-Vicandi has been working on the development of its Digital Medicine strategy and played an active role in designing multiple theses on AI investments and other initiatives involving artificial intelligence. Apart from this, he acts as an observer on the board of Latent Labs, Bioptimus, Cure51, Deepc, and Kiro.

Expanding Digital Medicine and AI Investments

Nunez-Vicandi also co-led the development of Sofia, Sofinnova’s proprietary AI platform. The platform supports investment activities and scientific analysis across the firm.

Furthermore, he helped lead Sofinnova’s collaborations with AWS and NVIDIA. These partnerships support the firm’s broader efforts to integrate AI into its investment processes.

Sofinnova’s Digital Medicine strategy focuses on two key areas: healthtech and techbio. Healthtech applies technology to improve healthcare delivery. Meanwhile, techbio uses AI and advanced computational methods for biological research and drug discovery.

“Javier combines clinical experience, scientific rigor and a deep understanding of technology,” said Antoine Papiernik, Chairman and Managing Partner at Sofinnova Partners. “Since joining the firm, he has become a trusted investor, a valued colleague and an important contributor to our Digital Medicine strategy. We are delighted to welcome him to the partnership.”

Nunez-Vicandi welcomed the promotion and reflected on his clinical experience.

“My time seeing patients showed me just how critical getting treatments that work to the people that need them can be,” said Nunez-Vicandi. “It is a privilege to support world-class founders using AI to create a world of healthcare abundance at Sofinnova and I am excited to take on this new role.”

Nunez-Vicandi’s Healthcare and Investment Experience

Nunez-Vicandi’s first job before working for Sofinnova was with Heal Capital where he played a crucial role in helping the venture capital fund raise money from its inception to twelve deals made. His experience before that included his work as an analyst at M Ventures in data-driven healthcare and biotech investing.

He started his career as a medical practitioner at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Some of his duties included those at the National Spinal Injuries Centre and Churchill Hospital. Nunez-Vicandi is a holder of a Master of Philosophy degree with distinction from the University of Cambridge. He also graduated with MBBS from Newcastle University.
