A new Equifax® survey reveals HR leaders face challenges using AI and technology automation to enhance hiring, onboarding, and retention. The survey included over 250 HR professionals at the SHRM25 Conference. Findings show 50% of HR teams identify workflow automation as a top challenge.

“As AI and emerging technologies expand, HR leaders aim to automate repetitive tasks,” said Chris Johnson, SVP and GM, Equifax Workforce Solutions. “Automation frees time for human-centered work, improving employee engagement and retention.”

Fabricated or Misleading Resumes Remain Common

The survey also shows 71% of HR professionals encounter fabricated or misleading candidate information. Most issues arise in employment history, education, and credentials/licenses. Despite frequent fraud, only 20% of HR professionals feel confident detecting false information.

“AI-generated resumes increase the risk of misleading candidate data,” said Bart Lautenbach, SVP and GM, Talent Solutions, Equifax Workforce Solutions. “Automated employment verifications help organizations reduce hiring risks and improve ROI.”

Background checks that verify employment, education, and criminal history remain essential to ensure quality hires. Equifax research confirms candidates with long tenures are more likely to remain in future roles.

Speed-to-Hire and Onboarding Improvements Needed

Only 12% of HR professionals report consistently fast hiring. Slow processes frustrate candidates and teams, risking lost talent and decreased morale. Additionally, 83% of HR teams see room to improve onboarding processes.

Technology can automate onboarding forms and workflows, helping HR teams ensure compliance while improving accuracy and speed. Real-time automation supports verifications, including background checks, improving efficiency.

Many HR teams already use AI to enhance hiring and onboarding, with 76% of survey respondents applying it for efficiency. However, HR leaders still seek advanced AI and automation solutions to further streamline processes.
