Katherine Lee has decades of leadership experience in financial services, investments and real estate to the Board. She has also held senior executive positions and has served on public and private boards for more than 20 years. This has enabled her to develop deep expertise in governance, regulatory oversight and organizational transformation. Her appointment reinforces Sun Life’s leadership as the company continues to create long-term value for clients and shareholders.
Lee has a successful track record managing complex organizations across multiple international markets. She provides valuable strategic insight aligned with Sun Life’s future business priorities.
Katherine Lee has extensive financial leadership experience
Lee has spent the past two decades with GE Capital, having held a series of senior leadership roles in Canada, the United States and Asia. She gained extensive experience in financial management, investment strategy and business transformation during this time.
She was President and Chief Executive Officer of GE Capital Canada from 2010 to 2015. Under her leadership, she led the diversified financial services organization through a significant transformation. She also helped build strategic alliances and capital relationships that support long-term value creation for the business.
Lee was previously CEO of GE Capital Real Estate Canada from 2002 to 2010. She also has held leadership positions as Director of Mergers & Acquisitions for GE Capital’s Pension Fund Advisory Services in San Francisco. She was also Managing Director of GE Capital Real Estate Korea in Seoul and Tokyo. In these roles she led investment operations, managed assets and helped grow regional businesses.
Lee started her professional career with Ernst & Young before joining GE Capital. Initially she worked in the Audit practice. She later joined the firm’s Corporate Insolvency & Restructuring Group, increasing her expertise in finance and corporate restructuring.
Strong governance expertise to support Sun Life’s future growth
Lee says her experience outside of her executive career includes serving on more than 20 boards. She has been a director of BCE Inc., Colliers International Group Inc., the Public Sector Pension Investment Board and Chorus Aviation Inc. She brings deep knowledge of corporate governance, enterprise risk management and strategic oversight in regulated industries and global financial services.
Lee holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto. She is also a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA).
She lives in Toronto and is an active volunteer in her community. She also mentors and coaches young professionals on career development. Lee was awarded the Horatio Alger Award in 2025, which recognizes role models committed to the principles of integrity, perseverance and compassion for others, whose lives exemplify personal and professional success.
