More than half of Gen Z professionals now consider ChatGPT a colleague or even a friend, according to a new report from Resume.org released on May 21. The survey highlights how younger workers increasingly rely on artificial intelligence not just for productivity but also for emotional support.
The findings, based on responses from over 8,600 full-time workers in the U.S., show that 11% of respondents regularly use ChatGPT — a figure that rises to 21% among Gen Z employees. Among those users, more than 80% said they turn to the AI tool for work tasks, while 66% use it to brainstorm or refine ideas.
Interestingly, nearly half of Gen Z respondents said they prefer asking ChatGPT over consulting their managers. Irina Pichura, a career coach at Resume.org, explained this trend: “Gen Z entered the workforce at a time when tools like ChatGPT were becoming mainstream. They don’t see it as a threat — rather, it’s a productivity booster and a real-time support system.”
Beyond professional use, many Gen Z workers engage with ChatGPT in more casual and emotional contexts. About 37% use it for personal chats, 24% for games, and 14% admit to using it as a way to appear busy during downtime. One in five Gen Z users spends an hour or more interacting with ChatGPT daily during work hours — often seeking advice on personal challenges, emotional health, or relationships.
The tool’s role has extended into the emotional realm for many younger users, with 36% calling it a source of entertainment, 32% viewing it as a companion, and 21% even likening it to a therapist.
“Gen Z is used to instant access to answers. In high-pressure or remote work settings, ChatGPT offers fast, judgment-free responses — often making it a more comfortable option than approaching a supervisor,” Pichura added.
While AI might help ease stress and free up time for connection-building, data from Glassdoor suggests that workplace friendships are declining. Remote work, frequent turnover, and layoffs have made forming relationships more difficult. Still, KPMG suggests employers can foster connection by celebrating team milestones and encouraging social interaction — with AI playing a supporting role in enabling those opportunities.
