Checkr Introduces Fraud Detection Suite to Help Companies Fight AI-Powered Hiring Fraud

Hiring Fraud

Checkr has launched its AI hiring fraud detection suite to help companies identify and prevent fraud throughout recruitment. The AI-powered verification platform is designed as a solution to monitor identity and fraud signals across the hiring lifecycle. It supports checks from initial applications and interviews through post-hire reverification.

Rising Fraud Risks Drive Continuous Verification

Hiring fraud is not just restricted to resume and credential fraud anymore. The imposters can masquerade themselves in various stages of the hiring process. Therefore, one-time background checks cannot be enough to catch all threats.

There have been warnings from the FBI that North Korean IT professionals have stolen identities in order to land themselves jobs with U.S. firms. This has been followed up by the DOJ, which is prosecuting the schemes that make use of stolen identities of Americans in more than 100 U.S. firms.

“Hiring was built for a world where a resume, a video interview and a government ID were reliable proxies for identity. AI has broken that model,” said Daniel Yanisse, co-founder and CEO of Checkr. “Today, a candidate can fabricate not just their credentials, but the identity behind them. A one-time identity check is no longer enough. Employers need more sophisticated and continuous verification methods across the hiring lifecycle to know that the person applying, interviewing, and ultimately showing up for work is the same individual.”

He added that employers need continuous verification to confirm candidates remain the same people throughout recruitment and employment.

Recent Checkr beta analysis found that there is also rampant resume fraud signaling. Among customers using its resume fraud screening software, 36% percent of resumes had signaling for review. Technical jobs were the most vulnerable. The resumes for software and AI engineering had 50% signal rates compared with 23% to 27% for sales, marketing, and operations.

Key Features of the Fraud Detection Suite

The suite combines multiple signals to give employers a broader view of candidate authenticity. Its capabilities include:

  • AI-powered resume fraud detection: Reviews applications and checks personal information against known fraud signals. It also compares claimed credentials with more than 260 million verified profiles.
  • Image comparison: Checks images from candidate profiles, interviews, and government-issued identification for inconsistencies.
  • Deepfake detection: Examines remote interview videos, audio, and photos for synthetic or AI-altered content.
  • Biometric identity verification: Matches live selfies with government-issued IDs and uses liveness detection to identify genuine individuals.
  • Device signals: Identifies suspicious device footprints, manipulation, and spoofing.
  • Location correlation: Flags possible location concealment through VPNs, proxies, or emulators.

The system draws on Checkr’s data graph, which covers billions of records and more than 260 million unique U.S. identities.

Megan Baldock, head of people at Datavations, highlighted the need for layered recruitment checks.

“The rise of AI has fundamentally shifted how candidate information is presented, making traditional vetting less reliable,” said Megan Baldock, head of people at Datavations. “Checkr’s fraud detection tool provides a critical layer of verification. The best way to set your talent acquisition team up for success in this world of deepfakes and AI resumes is to have a layered approach with checks and balances at every stage. Checkr’s resume fraud tool is a no-brainer as a first line of defense.”
